John Dorman Duty-To-God Award

Nominations

One way to faithfully continue John’s legacy was to create an annual award to recognize faith and leadership in young adults today.  We feel it appropriate to do this through the Boy Scout program at JCUMC. Starting in 2008, the Johns Creek UMM has recognized Eagle Scouts annually that exemplify the character traits that John felt made the biggest impact on him; namely, Duty-to-God, Leadership and Service to Others.  One scout out of all nominated each year is presented a specially engraved knife with all qualified nominees receiving a special leadership bible.

Requirements are that the Scout will have earned the Eagle Scout rank prior to his nomination, is a Christian, is still in high school, and has been nominated by an adult leader in their troop.

John Dorman Award:

John Dorman was a man dedicated to his faith, his family, and his friends. He, his wife Lynne, and their son Andrew lived in the Suwanee, GA area for years has been active members of Johns Creek UMC.  John was an active member of the United Methodist Men fellowship and was a dedicated leader of his Friday morning Bible study group. In addition to his faith, John was proud that he was an Eagle Scout and kept one of the largest, custom-made knife collections anywhere.

Leaving a Legacy

John, unfortunately, left us much too soon in early 2007 due to cancer.  In order to honor him and to remember his legacy of faith & family, the United Methodist Men (UMM) at Johns Creek UMC, with Lynne’s support, hosts an annual breakfast in his honor. The purpose is to remember John, to continue his legacy of Christian faith, and most importantly to encourage the development of faith in young men. John knew that Boy Scouts made a major impact on his life by instilling core values in him which carried through his life, and the UMM at JCUMC felt that it could best remember John by sharing that gift with future generations of young men.

Recognizing Today's Faithful Youth

The UMM at Johns Creek wanted to continue John’s legacy by creating an annual award and recognition breakfast to recognize Faith and Leadership in young men today. As John was an Eagle Scout, it was appropriate to do this through the Boy Scouts. Starting in 2008, the Johns Creek UMM has annually recognized Eagle Scouts that best exemplify the character traits that John felt made the biggest impact on him – Duty to God, Leadership, and Service to others.
