Timeline PhotosThis past Saturday, Matt Reitz, a member of our Atlanta Area Council International Committee, was posthumously awarded The BSA Honor Medal with Crossed Palms, for his meritorious action. On a summer evening in 2017, Matthew spotted a raging propane gas fire. He evacuated the home, then battled the roaring fire. His actions saved the lives of three people and prevented a home from destruction by fire and explosion.The Reitz family accepted the recognition from the BSA National Court of Honor, on behalf of Matthew W. Reitz. This award was presented posthumously to the Reitz family, as Matthew unexpectedly lost his life on April 27, 2018. The Honor Medal with Crossed Palms is presented to Scouts and Leaders “who have attempted to save a life at extreme risk to self, demonstrating exceptional heroism and extraordinary skill or resourcefulness.” It is the highest BSA award for meritorious action.
